We've tried to keep this album as real and original as possible. It was always going to be an eclectic mix of styles because Africa is a continent with many cultural dynamics and influences - we've done our best to represent that although we acknowledge the fact that we want to cover more countries and more female artists - it will happen as we grow. On the album, we've managed to bring together the best of African Hip Hop from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Senegal, Gambia and Nigeria. Afrolution is actually the first compilation to merge both the Francophone and Anglophone countries on one CD.
The album has also been compiled with the primary aim of giving the rest of the planet some insight into our world musically and visually. The DVD contains some amazing videos and fascinating interviews. Among them are interviews with Speech from Arrested Development and award winning British writer, Patrick Neate (author of global Hip Hop book, Where You're At), in order to get an experienced perspective on how Americans and British people view our scene. As much as we need to teach the world about what we do, we can also learn from them about how they see us. On a final note, while we don't want to single out territories, we feel it's important to acknowledge the Cape Town scene in South Africa and the brothers from POC for their contribution to the African Hip Hop Scene. Those brothers have been at it a long time keeping all the grassroots elements of hip hop alive - check out the African Hip Hop Indaba b-boying on the DVD - its massive!
